Lily Cummins works across drawing and installation using spatial experiences and memory as a trigger.

Moving between expansive wall drawing to intimate collages, Cummins sits within a wave of contemporary artists who are pushing the definitions of what drawing is in our time.

In 2018 she travelled travel to Leipzig, Germany, to join the Pilotenkueche International Art Program for a residency in an abandoned perfume factory where she will expand upon the residual, often romanticised, trace fabric / elements of a temporal space.

She bought these ideas into play in the exhibitions PROXIMITY at Articulate Project Space, Sydney (2017) and Paper and Print at Factory 49 in 2016, responding to architecture – its textures, energy, sound, light and floorplan as mediums in their own right. Often using found objects to extend her drawings as a connector between space, place and memory, that had a tangibility and a truth in an otherwise ethereal process.

Lily works with a combination of abstract and recognisable forms, questioning the idea of representation and creating a dream-like patchwork of memory.

Through experiments with striking combinations of sickly yellows, greens and pinks, she allows colours that reject the obvious harmony within art to become iconographic. Her work has an ambiguous narrative, conceived through repeated forms and structures. The text, characters and settings are all aspects which the viewer can relate to, but simultaneously struggles to make sense of; as though trying to recall a memory.

Similar to how memories are erased or distorted, her work explores a similar process. Shapes are drawn and then redrawn, text written only to be crossed out leaving it barley legible to the viewer and human figures appear as anonymous floating ghosts.

Based in Sydney, she graduated with a Masters of Fine Arts from the National Art School in 2017.
