The Millennials @ STURT / Three millennial furniture makers
Three millennial furniture designer/makers – Rolf Barfoed, Elliot Bastianon and Andrew Carvolth will come together in an inspiring group show launching at Sturt Gallery, Mittagong this month. Connected by geography, respect and friendship, THE MILLENNIALS is a celebration of the new directions and ambitious design practices of this innovative generation.
With an impressive line-up of past exhibitions including shows in Milan, The National Museum of Art in Mexico, Craft ACT, The Jam Factory SA and Sturt Gallery, Mittagong NSW, this multi-award winning group of designers have emerged and settled into successful studio practices with names that will no doubt be synonymous with Australian design in the 21st century.
Barfoed creates in his studio in the ACT while at the same time tutoring Cabinet Making at the Canberra Institute of Technology. For The Millennials, Barfoed delivers three pairs of bedside cabinets using a cross-section of approaches to furniture production.
Also based in the ACT, Bastianon exhibits his ‘Degree’ collection, defined by visual lightness, crisp geometry and asymmetric construction. Elliot uses steel to free his designs from bulky underframes, weight and complexity while allowing strength for robust everyday use. Timber surfaces are added to create warm tactile elements paying tribute to joinery tradition.
Carvolth is craftsman and designer based in Adelaide. His practice is defined by the reappropriation of traditional making processes while attempting to capture a uniquely Australian vernacular. Andrew’s AP chair explores mould making, sand-casting and weaving, combining traditional manufacturing techniques in an exciting and unconventional manner.
The exhibition opens 11pm, Sunday 14th February and will run until 4th April 2021.
