THE SUBTLE MOTHER, works by Phillip Frankcombe
The Subtle Mother, An intimate title, which could bring a nearness, a domestic, quiet but strong character who loves.
The intention here is to go wider into the creative feminine force, Mother Earth Herself.
This energy has historically been appreciated and worshipped through the Goddess; Shakti, Athens, Mother Mary/Madonna, Isis, Quan Yin, Holy Ghost and the Kundalini to name a few. Most of these paintings are related to that aspect of God the Mother; the energy that is creativity itself, silent, but the power, The Subtle Mother.
My understanding of this comes from Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi who started Sahaja Yoga Meditation in 1970;
giving a way for humans to reveal within themselves this knowledge in a silent way.The aim in these works is to mix different religions and cultural symbols to invoke a link with this inner but universal quality. Using canvas, canvas boards, MDF, acrylic paints are the start, finishing in oils for strength of colour and detail.
Handmade stencils are mixed in with nature. Varnish gives a gloss and a protective coating.Exhibition Opening 15 October at 1pm

AWASH WITH COLOUR Watercolour Group Exhibition
AWASH WITH COLOUR
Watercolour can sometimes be the forgotten or ‘feared’ medium and that is so unfair … as watercolour has a magic and mystery that no other medium can match. The translucency that comes with washes and the ‘happy accidents’ that can occur are addictive and keep us going.
We are a group that really feels more like a family and we come together on a Tuesday morning at the BDAS to chat, laugh and create under the guidance and tutorage of Kim Shannon and Wayne Davis. We don’t know how they put up with us sometimes … but it is a wonderful environment
Please come do visit the exhibition and enjoy the journey with us.
Awash with Colour is open from 6 to 11 October with the opening on Saturday 8 October at 2pm
Everyone is welcome!

No Time To Spare, Southern Highlands Photographic Exhibition
“No Time To Spare, Southern Highlands”, highlights some of the at risk heritage of the Highlands. The collection of photographs of the area has been created by local Southern Highlands photographers.
The story …
In 1961 the National Trust staged an exhibition of photographs by renowned photographer Max Dupain. Entitled “No Time To Spare” it featured 34 buildings identified as worthy of preservation. Sixty years later in 2021, the Trust staged a second “No Time To Spare” exhibition of photographs by several photographers. Now in 2022, images of local properties have been created as “No Time To Spare, Southern Highlands”.

Keith Looby Exhibition – Dichotomy
A rare exhibition of paintings and etchings by Archibald Prize Winner Keith Looby, presented by Spud Lane Studios.
Opened by Australia’s notable art critic John McDonald, Keith Looby’s exhibition “Dichotomy” is showing at Spud Lane Studios in Robertson, NSW Southern Highlands from 27 August – 9 October 2022.
Few artists have been so influential yet enigmatic than Sydney artist Keith Looby.
As a 1984 Archibald winner with a portrait of Max Gillies as Bob Hawke, Looby is known for holding Australian society to account with his incisive, satirical humour and fearless commentary of the late 20th century, yet today his name and works are hidden from view.
“Dichotomy” is an exhibition of paintings, drawings and etchings from Looby’s personal collection and it demonstrates the dichotomy evident in his work.
Curator of the show, artist Ric Abel examines a statement made by Looby: “When I draw, I draw as a Protestant. When I paint, I paint as a Catholic. Although I see myself as an atheist.”
Keith explained to Ric, that his drawings generally follow a narrative and are a form of protest, while his paintings from the 1980s onwards were all about letting go to the process of painting.
The show includes work from Looby’s seminal Black and White History of Australia series of drawings on the horrors of Colonialism, and his explorative Australian landscapes painted in Tasmania, as well as more figurative works in his unmistakeable style. These extraordinary and compelling paintings and etchings promise to engage art lovers and collectors from the Southern Highlands and beyond.

FRENCH LIFE – ‘La vie Française’ BRUCE CHANTER at the Milk Factory Gallery
Bruce’s recent collection of works of Paris living and life in the French countryside – paintings depicting life in France, capturing everyday moments as the French Impressionists so romantically did at the turn of the last century in their works. People seen enjoying the cafes and streets of Paris, working in fields and farms and living in the ancient villages of rural France, are all well represented in the show. These popular oil paintings are also beautifully presented in professionally framed salon style mouldings, hand chosen by Bruce to compliment the subjects.
Oils on canvas, in beautiful salon frames.
