Art Glass Beads
Glass Bead Artist Judy Dyson
Judy Dyson has been fascinated with glass since her childhood. More recently she has been making her own glass beads and jewellery after attending a workshop at Geelong Grammar in 2005 run by Katherine Wardell as part of the Fibre Forum programme.
Glass bead making is an ancient craft and the oldest known beads are over 40000 old.
Beads are made by melting glass in a hot head burner and then laying the molten glass onto a stainless steel mandrel which is rotated in the flame. More glass is added until the bead is the desired size. Different colours can be added to create patterns and the shape of the bead can be varied by the artist.
Once a bead is completed it is taken from the flame and plunged into a tub of vermiculite to cool slowly. Once cool it is placed into a kiln to anneal the glass and prevent it from cracking.
The beads can be made it a wide range of striking and original jewellery such as necklaces, bracelets, ear rings and ornaments.
Judy has now had three exhibitions of her work in the Southern Highlands.

Pyrography Workshop at Turned Around Studio
Pyrography is the art of decorating wood or other materials with burn marks resulting from the controlled application of a heated object such as a poker, heated steel tip pen or solar energy. It is also known as pokerwork or wood burning. The term means “writing with fire”, from the Greek pur (fire) and graphos (writing). Under the guiding hand of Steve, our guest tutor from Styro Pyrography, you will learn and practice how varying the type of tip used, the temperature, or the way the iron is applied to the material can create different effects, and a range of tones and shades can be achieved. As an Australian Pyrography artist influenced by Australian landscapes, Steve likes to use reclaimed timber where possible in order to produce original and unique burnings. These one day workshops are designed for beginners to provide an introduction to pyrography. More advanced workshops are available in August (2-day workshop, 21st-22nd).

Road to Nowhere – Exhibition by Andrew Kelly
Wanderings through the physical world and the imagination in between lockdowns
While passionate about composition and technique, nostalgia and childhood memory are strong themes in Andrew’s work. His aim in combining these areas of interest is to create (as Jeffrey Smart might say) “beautiful pictures”, that connect with the viewer via either subject or mood. Andrew subscribes to the view that the best landscape painting occurs when one knows the subject well – Australian colour palettes and motifs feature heavily in his work. Progress means that the role of the urban landscape artist is also that of a documentarian – many of the architectural subjects that he has painted have since been demolished or remodelled beyond what his work recognises.
